LAND Remediation, Inc. was contracted for the remediation of approximately 3,000 LF of the Saranac River in Plattsburgh, NY, from a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) site to the mouth of the river at Lake Champlain. The project was conducted over three construction seasons (2020–2022) and included sediment removal, stabilization, and restoration of the river system.
To manage water and isolate work zones, temporary cofferdams were installed to bisect the river, enabling dry excavation. Water collected from these enclosures was pumped over 2,500 LF back to the MGP site for treatment at a newly constructed 2,000 GPM water treatment plant. Excavated sediments were transported to a Temporary Fabric Structure (TFS) for screening and stabilization. Material larger than 6” was washed and reused as river backfill. Temporary bridge crossings were constructed to access work areas located across the river channel. Optical and vibration monitoring was conducted throughout to ensure structural integrity of nearby bridges and infrastructure.
Following the remediation, LRI completed site-wide restoration in 2023 under a separate contract, including infrastructure demobilization, capping the site, and conversion of the site to a public park.
