Project Summary

LAND Remediation, Inc. (LRI) partnered with GEI Consultants as the primary remedial construction subcontractor to execute a full-scale design and construction program for the Gastown Former MGP Site and adjacent Tonawanda Creek. The project involved a combination of upland and in-water remediation, executed while maintaining safe access for ongoing site tenants and pedestrian traffic along the Erie Canal Bikeway.

Key elements of the program included the abatement and demolition of on-site structures, in-situ solidification (ISS) of 15,000 CY of impacted upland soils, dredging, stabilization, and backfilling of the contaminated creek sediments. Sediment from Tonawanda Creek was managed and placed into an on-site repository, constructed using a vertical column compression ring via ISS methods, enclosing the former gas holder footprint. The work also included the installation of three one-pass collection trenches, full restoration of the Tonawanda Creek shoreline, and detailed pedestrian and traffic control measures, all while coordinating closely with utilities and site tenants to avoid disruptions.

LRI also conducted treatability testing to inform the ISS design parameters, contributing directly to long-term performance outcomes.
