LAND Remediation, Inc. (LRI) served as the prime remediation contractor across three separate phases of environmental cleanup in a challenging wetland environment at the Harbor Point MGP Site, located in Utica, NY.
LRI value-engineered an alternate geotechnical approach to the excavation of over 100,000 CY of PAH-impacted soils within a soft, unstable wetland area during Phase 1. This phase involved the in-situ stabilization (ISS) of over 90,000 CY of PAH-impacted soils using a large excavator and engineered grout blended with the soils, forming a low-permeability monolith. After curing, the center interior was safely excavated while retaining the monolith’s perimeter and floor as a hydraulic barrier, eliminating the need for extensive groundwater treatment and handling.
This provided the client with over $1 million in cost-savings. Following excavation, the area was backfilled with clean imported material and native wetland species were re-established. Phases 2 & 3 included excavation of 45,000 CY of MGP-impacted soils within temporary sheeted cells, transportation and disposal of impacted material, installation of site access roads and groundwater controls, and full and shoreline restoration.
