LAND Remediation, Inc. (LRI) was awarded this USACE project to execute maintenance dredging of the Albany Turning Basin, a critical navigational feature on the upper Hudson River.
The work scope included removal of approximately 40,000 CY of Class B NYSDEC-regulated contaminated sediment, followed by transport and upland placement. Sediment was mechanically dredged into hopper barges and transported approximately 5 miles downriver to the Dredged Material Placement Site (DMPS) on Houghtaling Island.
There, LRI implemented a hydraulic off-loading process to pump material from barges into prepared containment cells. Prior to dredging operations, LRI prepared the DMPS by grading the containment cells, clearing trees and vegetation, removing one berm to increase capacity, and restoring dike walls to a 3:1 slope to meet engineering requirements. An off-loading platform was constructed in the Hudson River to enable hydraulic unloading of dredged material from barges directly into the prepared containment cells.
